Apart from using Open Source technologies to drive all of our products and most services, we decided to share them with you so that you can also enjoy good quality applications, all FREE (no license required)!
Heckert is the GNU mascot and he reckons that you should consider using free open source software as well!
"The term "open source" refers to something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible. The term originated in the context of software development to designate a specific approach to creating computer programs."
Websites displayed professionally and neatly on Mobile devices ranging from Smartphones to Tablets.
This description fits into our business philosophy perfectly. We believe that computer programs should be available to anyone who would like to use it and actively maintained by actual professionals & anyone wanting to contribute, in a community.
The Open Source technologies we use:
"The KDE® Community is a free software community dedicated to creating an open and user-friendly computing experience, offering an advanced graphical desktop, a wide variety of applications for communication, work, education and entertainment and a platform to easily build new applications upon. "
Wevolution uses KDE Linux as an operating system, on which we run our open source software. Using the Linux platform also holds a few extra benefits (out of a developer perspective) such as:
Rapid deployment of websites
The advantage of not having to pay annual license fees for the Operating system and software used, so it's totally FREE!
Fewer viruses and loss of client data.
Using a trending operating system which more people are adapting every day.
"Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor; it can be used to create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos and complex paintings."
Wevolution uses Inkscape for all vector image editing and creation. Supporting multiple formats, this gives us complete control over most formats that are widely used in the industry.
Inkscape is a very handy tool for vector graphics, this is great for smaller businesses that do not wish to pay license fees. Vector graphics has never been this simple to create and to use as a aspect of your business.
The artwork below was made using Inkscape software, it works in Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari (Unfortunately not Internet Explorer)
"Audacity is a free open source digital audio editor and recording computer software application, available for Windows, macOS/OS X, Linux and other operating systems."
Wevolution website design uses Audacity to edit and cut audio tracks for Facebook and other sources that make use of audio files.
"Kdenlive is a free and open-source video editing software based on the MLT Framework, KDE and Qt. The project was started by Jason Wood in 2002, and is now maintained by a small team of developers."
We use Kdenlive for post-production on videos for our clients.
We use Brackets IDE at Wevolution for HTML5 & CSS3 changes.
"Drupal is a free and open source content-management framework written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License."
Wevolution prefers using Drupal for all CMS tasks and has been using Drupal since version 6.
"Bootstrap is a free and open-source front-end library for designing websites and web applications. It contains HTML- and CSS-based design templates for typography, forms, buttons, navigation.."
Wevolution uses Bootstrap for fast-loading smaller sites that are pleasing to the eye.
"GIMP is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, converting between different image formats, and more specialised tasks."
At Wevolution we use GIMP GNU image manipulation software to apply slight changes to original images, giving it a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
